Tall Wood Building Demonstration Project Reaches New Heights in Canada
Three years after launching a request for an Expression of Interest, through funding received from Natural Resources Canada, for Canadian design teams willing to undertake an innovative approach to designing and building high-rise wood demonstration projects, the Canadian Wood Council (CWC) was proudly in attendance at the ‘topping out’ celebration of the University of British Columbia’s Brock Commons Phase 1 tall wood student residence. The 2015 edition (published 2016) is updated in compliance with National Building Code of Canada 2015 and CSA Standard O86-2014. The major updates include the mechanics based approach for determining the shear resistance of shearwalls and diaphragms along with the selection tables that were developed based on this methodology. Also included are updated nails, screws and bolts selection tables, and design information on mid-rise wood frame construction. The 2015 Wood Design Manual includes the “Engineering design in wood” Standard (CSA O86-14) and is available in a printed format. An electronic format will be available soon.
