Lateral Stability Option
Introduction
This lesson covers design settings and lateral stability in built up beams, focusing on the CL factor. Lateral stability calculations are auto-reported, with fastening methods ensuring unit behavior for lateral torsional buckling. The unsupported length option allows calculation based on lateral support points or 0 moment points. An example of a two-span beam illustrates how the unsupported length affects bending. Finally, modifying support conditions impacts moment resistance, as demonstrated by a built-up beam resisting twice the moment force when laterally supported.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Analyze the impact of different CL calculation methods in Sizer, including prescriptive assumptions and CSA-based equations, on beam stability.
- Evaluate the effect of fastening methods in built-up beams on moment resistance and structural performance.
- Demonstrate how unsupported length (Lu) calculations influence lateral stability and compare the implications of using lateral support points versus points of zero moment.
- Assess the role of interior support conditions in lateral stability and their effect on a beam’s moment resistance and failure risk.
