Position Overview
The Canadian Wood Council, Ontario Wood Works program, is seeking a self-motivated Communications and Outreach Manager with experience in an industry association environment, to coordinate its communication program, deliver educational events, and optimize outreach to our target audience.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the ON Executive Director, the Ontario Technical team, and coordinating efforts with the National Communications and Events team, develop and execute annual communications and event program strategies. 
  • Plan, develop and coordinate a series of education and outreach events and presentations that support annual plans and objectives for the ON Wood WORKS!  program.
  • Outreach will also cover Municipalities and their associations, particularly in Northern Ontario to generate new project leads.
  • Draft new content for a variety of wood construction industry communication initiatives.
  • Organize industry events which include speaking opportunities and trade show participation.
  • Manage projects and ensure content is publication-ready and consistent with CWC branding and messaging.
  • Create and distribute press releases and maintain media lists.
  • Working with the Executive Director, generate new sponsorship opportunities to maximize engagement and revenue, manage budgets, and provide support to the ON Wood WORKS! team.
  • Critically evaluate existing services and develop new offerings for sponsors and stakeholders to build greater engagement and revenue opportunities for the ON Wood WORKS!  program.
  • Ensure communication platforms (websites, LinkedIn, social media) are engaging, innovative and appealing, yielding excellent analytics.
  • Essential travel within Ontario and occasionally Canada to ensure effective communications, successful events and new member and stakeholder service delivery.

Qualifications and Assets

  • At least five years of communications experience creating strategic, targeted content generating measurable ROIs.
  • At least five years of experience in planning, managing, promoting and executing events.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience with website editing, management and content creation.
  • Required verbal and written proficiency in English. French verbal and written proficiency a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media channels effectively to deliver marketing content.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of wood industry and government relations is an asset.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, event planning, journalism or a related field.
  • Candidate must be located in Northern Ontario.
  • Bilingual (French/English) an asset.

Job Posting: Structural Engineering Position

Responsibilities

As a Technical Service Specialist – Structural, you will be responsible for strategic building code and standards initiatives; applied engineering problem-solving; developing new design tools and publications; delivery of end products through seminars and media to targeted audiences including engineers, architects, building officials and builders, and supporting the development and maintenance of lumber design values. Required to travel within North America once it is safe to do so.

Competencies

  • Ability to apply your excellent understanding of structural analysis and design with a good knowledge of wood as a structural material.
  • A strong understanding of statistics.
  • An undergraduate Civil (Structural) Engineering degree or a Wood Science degree having a solid understanding of wood design and appropriate structural engineering experience. A recent graduate with a graduate level degree(s) in Civil (Structural) Engineering, eligible for professional registration, will be considered.

Important Skills

To be a successful member of the Codes and Engineering team, you will have:

  • Strong computer skills, including structural modeling
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral in English
  • An ability to work in French (an asset)
  • Programming skills with Matlab or Python (an asset)
  • An understanding of the material and behavioural properties of wood (an asset)
  • An understanding of lumber grading and the lumber manufacturing industry (an asset)

This is a full-time position that is based out of CWC’s downtown Ottawa office. During COVID-19 restriction periods, you should be able to work safely and effectively from home. In the future, you should be able to work both in the Ottawa office and remotely, as needed.   • Excellente compréhension des statistiques.
  • Diplôme en ingénierie civile (structurale) de premier cycle ou diplôme en sciences du bois, solides connaissances en conception axée sur le bois et expérience appropriée en ingénierie. La candidature d’une personne ayant récemment obtenu un diplôme de deuxième cycle universitaire en ingénierie civile (structurale) et qui est admissible à l’accréditation auprès de l’ordre professionnel sera prise en considération.

A Nuclear First for Canada – Wood Used at the Chalk River Laboratories

The wood products industry can add ‘nuclear’ to its resume! The Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) project located in Chalk River, represents the first research campus in the country to use engineered mass timber as a structural material. The new wood hybrid buildings will receive support under the Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) Program. The Program, administered by Natural Resources Canada, aims to broaden the awareness of wood as a sustainable and renewable construction material and to increase the domestic capacity for wood in Canadian construction. Canadian and American Wood Councils Update Environmental Product Declarations

The Canadian Wood Council (CWC) and American Wood Council (AWC) have released updates for six environmental product declarations (EPDs) for North American wood products. Originally developed in 2013, the updated cradle-to-gate EPDs include softwood lumber, plywood, oriented strand board, laminated veneer lumber, I-joists and glue-laminated lumber. The Arbour, a 10-storey building planned for George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus, is one of the winning recipients of the Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) Program. Launched by Natural Resources Canada, the GCWood Program encourages the broader awareness and domestic capacity for wood in Canadian construction. The Arbour, which will use mass timber products, will demonstrate wood’s ability to complement other building materials in innovative applications such as tall construction. Read the press release.
